Dr Jiko Luveni will continue her role as the Speaker of Parliament for her second term.
This is after a secret ballot was conducted, where the members of parliament voted for their nomination.

Dr Luveni was nominated for the Speaker’s position by Assistant Minister for Employment, Youth and Sports, Alvick Maharaj while Opposition Whip Lynda Tabuya nominated SODELPA candidate Tanya Waqanika.

Dr Luveni collected 27 votes while her opponent – Tania Waqanika collected 24 votes.

Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Veena Bhatnagar has been elected as the Deputy Speaker.
The government side nominated Veena Bhatnagar while the opposition side nominated Adi Litia Qionibaravi.

Bhatnagar was elected after getting 27 votes while Qionibaravi got 24 votes.

Meanwhile the first sitting of the new parliament after the general elections took place this morning.

The official opening of parliament will be at 3 this afternoon.

The Fiji First Party has 27 seats in parliament, SODELPA has 21 seats while NFP has three seats.
