The High Commissioner of India to Fiji, Her Excellency Padmaja presented a donation of $15,000 to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund. This assistance is initiated through the concerted effort between India’s High Commission in Fiji, and India’s renowned Public Sector Undertakings namely Bank of Baroda, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LICI) and the New India Assurance Co. Ltd (NIA).

The donation was officially presented yesterday by High Commissioner Padmaja to the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Prime Minister, Immigration and Sugar Industry and Acting Permanent Secretary Foreign Affairs, Mr Yogesh Karan.

Receiving the assistance on behalf of the Prime Minister, PS Karan conveyed the Prime Minister’s appreciation to the Indian High Commission, Bank of Baroda, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LICI) and New India Assurance Co. Ltd (NIA) for their generosity and support.

PS Karan said that innovative partnerships as such; are crucial in strengthening solidarity and collaboration to aid building back better. He stated that the assistance given signifies the enhanced bilateral cooperation in advancing the development priorities of Fiji and India.

High Commissioner Padmaja stated that the Indian High Commission is pleased to make this timely contribution towards Fiji at such trying times. She said the assistance is also in recognition of the commendable work by the Fijian Government to increase outreach to revive the livelihood of communities who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

She reaffirmed India’s commitment to further strengthen the Fiji-India bilateral engagements through robust consultations on the potential development opportunities for the two nations.

High Commissioner Padmaja briefly mentioned some of the development cooperation initiatives of the Government of India in Fiji and in the region. India has last month approved a sum of US$ 850,000 through the India-UN Development Partnership Fund for supporting a new initiative to create a climate disaster risk financing framework for Fiji.
