33 teachers have been terminated, and most of these cases were due to corporal punishment.
This was confirmed by the Education Minister – Rosy Akbar, in response to concerns raised by the President of the Fijian Teachers Association – Netani Druavesi yesterday, during their Annual Conference held in Suva.
She has emphasized that teachers should not inflict corporal punishment on their students and the ministry will be working with civil society organizations and NGOs who can provide the relevant counseling.
Akbar also highlighted the issue of Teachers serving in maritime provinces – who are separated from their families for long periods of time that their cases will be looked at as well.
She said its in the best interest that they keep couples together unfortunately it does take time for the spouse and children to be transferred.
