Director of the MV Brianna vessel that services the Northern and Southern parts of the Lau group shared on the various challenges faced by the islanders.
Josateki Tagi highlighted this during his submissions to the Standing Committee on Natural Resources on the Petition for Government to provide Reliable, Safe, and Affordable Shipping services for the Lau group in Parliament this week.
Tagi says people should understand the challenges faced by people living in the isolated regions like Lau.
He says people in this islands depend on remittance from their families in Suva.
He says the subsidies provided by the Shipping Franchise Scheme needs to be increased. The upgrade of certain Jetties in the Lau Group was a major issue also highlighted.
The shipping Franchise Scheme main aim is to provides services and to create economic growth to some of the most isolated islands in Fiji. The MV Brianna services the upper Northern and southern part of Lau once a month.
