Digicel announced it will be the headline sponsor of the Suva Rugby club competition this season. The new agreement with the largest rugby union in the country, will see Digicel, the total communications and entertainment provider, become the naming rights sponsor of the well renowned club competition in Fiji.
This is a new three year deal starting from this season, the tournament will be re-named the Digicel Escott Shield and Digicel Koroturaga Championship. It will add to Digicel’s wider sports portfolio, which also includes Fiji Netball Association.
Digicel Fiji CEO, Farid Mohammed, said; “We are delighted to partner with the Suva Rugby Union to support their club competition. It is an exciting time for Digicel to return to grassroots level rugby sponsorship – for the first time in seven years. This partnership provides us with the opportunity to help develop club players. Digicel isn’t new to rugby sponsorship in Fiji having backed the Fiji Sevens and National Provincial Competition from 2006 to 2013.”
Suva Rugby Union Chairman, Aseri Rokoura, said; “We are thrilled to forge a new partnership with a well renowned brand in Digicel. They are steeped in rugby history with their Chairman, Mr. Denis O’Brien an ardent Ireland supporter on the international stage. We are delighted to be kicking-off our club competition tomorrow with Digicel’s full support. They know they are investing in the best of the best club competition and it is a win-win situation for both parties.”
“With the continued rural-urban drift, the SRU is conscious of its role in using rugby as a tool to keep Suva youths out of trouble and make an honest living through local rugby. We want to set up a platform to help players earn an overseas contract and donning the National Team Colours, a dream with Digicel’s sponsorship support that we want to make a reality for our member club players,” added Rokoura.
The 107-year old premiere Digicel Escott Shield competition will feature 14 teams with Army Green as defending champion. There will be 28 teams fighting for the Digicel Koroturaga title while 2 women’s teams have registered for the season. The Suva Rugby Digicel Club competition kicks-off at 8am tomorrow at the Bidesi and Buckhurst Grounds in Suva.
