Fiji Detector Dog Unit mourns the loss of one of its K9 officer who was laid to rest last week.

The Unit is a collaboration between the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service focusing on the protection of our borders.

K9 Eto was farewell at the Fiji Detector Dog Unit Complex in Nasese last week by his handler, members of the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, New Zealand Police and Australian Police.

The late K9 officer had also featured on our local programme – Border Patrol to combat the smuggling of illegal items into the country.

K9 Eto was brought over from the New Zealand Police Dog Academy in 2015 and was based at the Fiji Detector Dog Unit, a joint K9 operational team consisting of handlers from the Fiji Police Force and Fiji Revenue and Customs Service operating out of Nadi and Nasese.

K9 Eto had assisted with the detection of narcotics valued at millions of dollars and large sums of undeclared currencies.

Sharing the loss was David Huff the NZ Chief Customs Officer Pacific Detector Dog Programme who said K9 officers have a huge impact on operations worldwide.

Huff said the sadness and tears for ETO in Fiji and NZ is testament to what a dog means to them and they have lost one of their team.

He adds ETO was named by the people of Fiji, having served and protected the people and the country of Fiji well by protecting the borders and keeping the community safe.

Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, Customs Officer Sakiusa Lasaqa spoke on behalf of K9 Eto’s handler who is away overseas.

The sentiments echoed “You were a great partner and I am forever thankful for you….

“You made sure our beloved country was protected, Eto you did your job to the best of your ability and never quit on us despite how tired and fatigued you were.”

K9 officer Eto who died following a short illness was laid to rest at the Fiji Detector Dog Unit Complex.
