The Fiji Dental Association two day Annual conference ended today.

With the theme ” Meeting Oral Health Care demands through Innovations in Dental Science” the conference aims to find ways to improve oral health care in the country.

President of the Fiji Dental Association Dr Vikash Singh says dental diseases is one of the most common diseases in Fiji but largely not given priority.

Dr Singh added that these disease can be prevented if people take oral health care seriously.

Gum disease, cavities, mouth sore and oral cancer are example of dental diseases.

Dr Singh says oral health is important for one to have a good health in general.

He added, heart conditions and diabetes are also systemic diseases linked to poor oral health.

In order to improve oral health care in the country, around 150 practitioners have gathered for the two day Fiji Dental Association annual conference.

Meanwhile one of the speakers during the Fiji Dental Association Conference, an expert in the field Professor Nick Chandler from New Zealand says oral health care in the Pacific needs to improve.

Professor Chandler says dental care is important because of functional reasons as the teeth influences diet.

He added the state of dental care in the Pacific can increase through education of the public and the practitioners.
