The unemployment rate has risen due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The employment ministry is currently conducting a suvey to gather data on the number of people at home as businesses are forced to lay off employees.

The International Labour Organisation estimates that around 25 million workers around the world could become unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fiji, meanwhile is currently conducting a survey to determine the number of people unemployed.

The Ministry is ensuring that job losses are minimised and that all guarantees made to workers including the conditional re-employment of employees laid off due to the pandemic.

Bala says labour officers will follow up with employers to ensure that businesses do not violate the employment relations act of 2007.

The employment minister stressed the need for collaboration between employers, their employees, and the Ministry.
