The largest
portion of the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation’s total
budget allocation for 2019-2020 fiscal year is for the administration of the
nation’s core Social Protection Programs.

Minister for
Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Honorable Mereseini Vuniwaqa had a
courtesy visit from the President of the International Social Security
Association (ISSA),Professor Dr. Joachim Breuer at the Minister’s Boardroom in
Suva, this morning.

In the
meeting, Minister Vuniwaqa briefed the President of the International Social
Security Association on the Fijian Government’s commitment towards Social
Protection Programs. The Government’s social protection programs and
Government’s mission is to make every Fijian visible and to ensure that nobody
is left behind. The Ministry facilitates the Social Pension Scheme, Poverty
Benefit Scheme, Care and Protection Allowance and Disability Allowance,
Expanded Food Voucher Rural Pregnant Mothers, Bus Fare Concession as part
of the Social Protection Program. 

Minister
Vuniwaqa said the clientele benefitting from these programs include children,
pregnant women living in rural areas, persons with disabilities, single parents
with no source of income and the elderly; it’s across life’s spectrum from
cradle to the grave. Our social protection system has the key aim of leaving no
one behind and to reach the furthest behind, first.

President of
the International Social Security Association (ISSA),Professor Dr. Joachim
Breuer  highlighted to the forum that the roots of the International
Social Security Association lie in mutual insurance, the collective response of
19th-century European industrial workers to illness, unemployment, disability
and old age. “In the space of nine decades, the ISSA has expanded into a truly
worldwide Association, bringing together more than 320 social security
organizations in over 150 countries. With the immense challenges the world is
facing, its commitment to promoting social security will be needed more than
ever to secure social justice for all”.

Also present
at the meeting were the Senior Expert International Social Security for the
International Social Security Association, Ms. Carolin Konig, Chief Executive
Officer of the Fiji National Provident Fund, Mr Jaoji Koroi, Manager Strategic Planning, Mr Tevita
Kalou  and Director Social Welfare, Mr Rupeni Fatiaki.
