Real change in tackling violence against women and girls will only come about by changing mind-sets rather than by devising new policies and pouring money into it.
The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation has spearheaded the Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence against Women and Girls which was announced in Suva today and three other key ministries, namely the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, have come board.
“Fiji National Action Plan to prevent Violence against women and girls will focus on preventing domestic violence, intimate partner violence and sexual violence against women and girls with an emphasis on stopping violence before it starts,” the Minister of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Mereseini Vuniwaqa, said.
Furthermore, Minister Vuniwaqa has called for change in the way society “gives our boys license to act abusively and it’s up to girls to adjust accordingly” and dismisses “boys’ aggression as a function of their masculinity and we rationalise it”.
