The Ministry of Local Government and Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism have rolled-out a new process for business licensing in Fiji effective from 1st January, 2020.
The new process is a modernised approach which is faster and simpler, and will allow any type and size of business to apply for a license to operate.
The Municipal Councils will be issuing licenses to businesses within the town boundary areas only.
The management of the business licences for those businesses that are located in rural areas including villages, informal settlements and those who are located outside town boundaries will still be carried out by the District Offices in the respective areas.
Only three essential documents must be submitted with the application form.
1) Copy of Business Registration
2) Tax Identification Number
3) License Application Form
A copy of Investment Fiji Certificate and Work Permit of the Investor will be required for foreign investors.
Municipal Councils and District Offices will process business applications within a 48-hour time period.
The fees for each business license category are outlined in the Business License Schedule for Municipal Councils and District Officers.
All new businesses that are classified as “Low Risk” businesses must comply with all the legal and regulatory requirements within 6 months of obtaining the business registration/license.
All new buildings for business purposes must comply with OHS and NFA requirements.
For the “High Risk Businesses”, licenses will be issued but they cannot operate until all requirements are met.
The categorisation of business operation risks is also available with the Councils and District Officers which will determine the level of fees payment required.
