The Fiji Bus Operators Association is outraged and saddened at the death of a bus driver after he was assaulted at the Nausori Bus Station on Saturday, 3 October.

FBOA General Secretary Rohit Latchan condemned the attack on the bus driver, Subhash Chand, 56, and offered the condolences of all bus operators and fellow bus drivers to the victim’s family.

“Bus operators have previously raised the problem of violence against bus drivers and this is a tragic outcome of a public issue that needs to be addressed,” Mr Latchan said.

“Bus drivers often leave home early to ensure other people are able to get on with their lives. None of them ever imagine going to work one day and not coming back home.

“Our hearts go out the Mr Chand’s loved ones, colleagues and friends and we hope for justice for all of them,” Mr Latchan said.

In August 2018, the FBOA urged the travelling public to stop the physical and verbal abuse of bus drivers and to exercise restraint when they were frustrated over travelling problems.

The plead followed a growing trend of violence directed at bus drivers across the country in the months before that.
