The 46- year old driver involved in the Lakena Bus accident has been granted bail on strict conditions.
He appeared at the Nausori Magistrate court this morning for bail ruling.
Shalen Jattan is charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death, two counts of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm and one count of dangerous driving.
Resident Magistrate Shogeeth Somaratne says the prosecution submitted that the matter is of national interest due to the death of the two children.
However, he added the applicant’s liberty can not be deprived to quell public outcry.
Somaratne says withholding the bail should not be used as a punishment even for an accused that is alleged to have committed a serious crime in the country.
The bail conditions of the accused demands that he report to the Nausori Police Station every Saturday, a stop departure order issued and all travel documents seized.
The court also gave orders for the accused to receive further medical treatment.
It is alleged that he was assaulted while in remand.
The case will now be called on the 29th of October.
