Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has stressed that now is the time for everyone in Fiji to work together in solidarity to ensure sustainability of the Fijian economy.
Officiating at the opening of the British American Tobacco (BAT) new
leaf processing facility in Votualevu Nadi, the A-G stated that
cooperation from all stakeholders and sectors of the economy will ensure
there is job sustainability and creation in the country.
“The Government is very mindful of these types
of strategic investments that need to be made and we play a
facilitating role, provide the various incentives that’s required to
foster and engender, investment so businesses in Fiji feel confident,
they have a level-playing field; the rules are transparent; the rules
are consistent and indeed, policies are consistent to give their level
also acknowledged British American Tobacco Fiji for its continuous
support towards its employees as none of them faced termination from
work amid uncertain economic situation brought about by COVID-19.
BAT general manager Jeremy Hackett stated that BAT Fiji has shown
commitment to invest in the local economy and today’s opening of the
Green Leaf Threshing Factory represents the culmination of more than two
years of planning and hard work.
“When finished, BAT will have
invested approximately $10million in the Green Leaf Threshing Factory.
This project is a representation of BAT’s commitment to investing and
continuing to operate in the local industry.”
