The National Fire Authority has confirmed that the bodies of four elderly women aged around 70 years were found at the scene of a fire at Benau Road in Labasa.
NFA attended to the fire emergency call at Benau Road yesterday that destroyed a two-bedroom home.
At 1.38 am yesterday, the Labasa Fire Station was alerted of the house fire and responded immediately.
Upon arrival at the scene, the fire team found a two-bedroom wooden and corrugated iron house fully engulfed in flames.
The fire crew quickly used one delivery of water from the fire truck to extinguish the fire, stopping its spread to a nearby house three meters away.
The fire crew managed to extinguish and control the fire but it was very unfortunate that the bodies of four elderly women aged around 70 years were found at the scene.
It is understood that the family was asleep in the house when the fire started.
The intensity of the fire woke the owner and it was very unfortunate that four elderly women, one believed to be the mother of the owner were not able to escape.
NFA is very saddened by the loss of four lives in the fire and greatly sympathizes with the family on their loss.
NFA is working with police to conduct its investigations to determine the cause of the fire and circumstances surrounding the fire victims.
