HSBC World Rugby Women’s Series leaders New Zealand progressed to the Cup quarter-finals as the only team with a perfect record on Day One of the HSBC Sydney Sevens.

The Black Ferns continued their remarkable unbeaten run of matches in all competitions, winning their 46th consecutive match when beating England to qualify for the Cup quarter-finals as Pool A winners. France claimed second spot with two wins.

Pool B was a real scrap with Ireland surprising and upsetting Canada 15-14 in a thriller. Despite a draw against Russia, Ireland remained unbeaten and qualified top of the Pool by beating Fiji in another wonderful match. Russia then beat Canada in an arm wrestle to claim second spot.

Pool C was another close affair. Last year’s winners Australia enjoyed wins against Spain and China before USA proved too strong for the hosts 19-12 in their final match of the pool. Spain caused the upset of the day beating USA and then beat China in the last match of the day.

Australia, USA and Spain all finished with two wins from three matches with points difference determining that Australia finished first, USA second and Spain third.

Spain and Canada qualified for the Cup quarter-finals as the best two third-placed teams after the conclusion of the Pool stage.

Day Two action will see the Challenge semi-finals commence at 12:00 local time (GMT +11) with England versus Papua New Guinea and Fiji versus China. The Cup quarter-finals kick-off at 12:50.
