Australia have qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the women’s and men’s section following their wins at the Oceania 7s Rugby Championships, at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.

Qantas Australian Men’s 7s coach, Tim Walsh says that following on from an intense period of pre-season training and prepping for the new HSBC Sevens World Series- the Oceania 7s Championship was an important part of their preparation before kick off in Dubai later this month.

Walsh says it has been a long three days in Suva this week, but it was a worthy one.

The Aussie women trailed 12 point to Nil in their championship final against Fijiana and stormed home with a 24-Nil second-half to claim the gold medal.

That victory came after two wins over New Zealand in as many days, a huge boost of confidence for a young team.

The men came into their final with a job already ticked off in the form of Olympic qualification but they weren’t done with their success.

Australia trailed Fiji 7 points to 5, taking a 22points to 7 victory overall in the championship final.
