Assistant  Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Alipate Tuicolo Nagata opened the Western Youth Conference in Nadi this morning and has urged participants to focus on the Government’s 5-Year and 20-Year National Development Plans.

Addressing around 60 youth representatives from the provinces of Ra, Ba and Nadroga, he noted the Government’s commitment for youth via the Youth Capacity Building Program.
“This program is designed to empower, capacitate and enhance youth’s knowledge on the socio-economic development and providing various technical skills and training offered as part of the youth development program by the Ministry of Youth and Sports,” Assistant  Minister Nagata said.
“This Government through our ministry is committed to ensure that educational, leadership and employment opportunities is offered to young developing Fijians.”
Participants were reminded of the newly opened National Hub, the nation’s first-ever Youth Co Lab, at the University of the South Pacific’s main campus, which is accessible to all youths for research and to share ideas that empower and develop young people.

“This idea focuses on youths eventually moving into entrepreneurship, which will effectively open up the employment market, thus engaging young people. With such an initiative in place, youths are targeted more inclusively and effectively in the economy, society and the political sphere, which will effectively stimulate growth and development for the nation,” he added.
The Minister also urged youths to use the forum for meaningful dialogue, youth development and avenues to building the success of young Fijians.
“This forum has no place for youths to be political and I encourage you all to remain apolitical and focus on serving all Fijian youths in the communities.”
The three day conference includes representatives from sporting federations and organizations for people living with disabilities.
