These were the words of High Commissioner Jonathan Curr who was one of the panel speakers at the UNFPA Pacific Launch of the State of the World’s Population Report 2020, alongside Hon Mereseini Vuniwaqa (Ministry of Women ,Children and Poverty Alleviation – Fiji), Reverend James Bhagwan (Pacific Conference of Churches Secretariat) Anne Pakoa (Vanuatu Human Rights Coalition) and Anaseini Ulakai (Tonga ICPD 25 Youth Champion)

Mr Curr commended UNFPA for highlighting gender inequality issues and initiating conversations in the Pacific and around the world.

Gender equality is a priority for New Zealand’s development assistance and we are committed to pursuing development outcomes that are effective, inclusive, resilient and sustained.

This priority has been sharpened following the impacts of COVID-19, and following a gender gap analysis we plan to focus our efforts on women in governance/leadership, elimination of violence against women and girls, and social protection measures in response to #COVID19.
