The #FijianGovernment has received a pledge of $300,000 in cash assistance from Vodafone #Fiji to help and rebuild schools in the Northern Division that were damaged by Tropical Cyclone Yasa.

While receiving the donation, Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum thanked Vodafone for the assistance.

“We are working with the Asset Management Unit through the Ministry of Education and the Construction Implementation Unit (CIU), and the funding from Vodafone will immediately go towards the repairs of schools.”

The A-G emphasised that the main aim of the Fijian Government is to get the schools up and running.

“This $300,000 will be used for all the schools in the R1 and R2 category, as schools are damaged they are rated in respect as to the type and amount of damage that have occurred to the buildings in the schools.”

The A-G added that the R1 and R2 category would have damages amounting to around $10,000 to $20,000.

A total of 104 schools and public buildings were damaged in the Northern Division during #TCYasa, with 99 being schools and 5 being public buildings.

Vodafone Regional Chief Executive Officer, Pradeep Lal said the damage to school infrastructure is of immediate concern as thousands prepare to go back to school on the 19th of this month.
