23 villages will benefit from the Ministry of Waterways and Environment Coastline Protection Program next year.
The 23 villages are part of the total 25 seawall projects that the ministry will work on in 2019.
With the budgetary allocation of 47 point 49 million dollars to the Ministry under the 2018/2019 budget, Minister for Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy says they aim to complete all the 25 seawalls next year.
This is part of the ministry’s aim to improve coastal resilience of coastline communities to the impact of coastal erosion, storm surge and flooding.
The Minister also highlighted the ‘River Bank Protection Program’ that will engage the members of the community to plant vetiver grass that will stabilize and protect the river bank. The program is set commence in a months’ time with the community of Naveicovatu village in Wainibuku, Tailevu.
Drainage in rural residential areas and farms will be another area the the Ministry will focus on next year.
