There were 23 people charged with a total of 48 counts of separate incidents in February.

The offences were rape (34), attempted rape (2), abduction with intent to have carnal knowledge (1), indecent assault (3) and sexual assault (8).

The following data is authorised for release by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and relates to the number of formal indictments (Information) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the Director of Public Prosecutions throughout the month.

This data is confined to incidents of serious sexual offences only.

Of the 23 people charged, two were juveniles. A 15-year-old boy was charged with the rape of his 7-year-old niece while a 17-year-old boy was charged with the rape and sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl.

There were 22 victims of whom 17 victims were under the age of 18 years.

There were 19 female victims and 3 male victims.

There were 8 incidents where the victims and the accused were related to one another.

Three men were charged with the rape of an 11-year-old girl. The accused persons were a 72year-old grandfather, a 69-year-old granduncle and a 20 year- old cousin of the victim.

A 64-year-old man was charged with the rape his 11-year old granddaughter, however, this matter was discontinued due to insufficient evidence.

A 38-year-old man was charged with the rape and attempted rape of his 12-year-old stepdaughter while in another incident, a 36-year-old man was charged with the rape of his 17year-old stepdaughter.

There was one incident where a 45-year-old man was charged with multiple counts of rape and sexual assault of his 15-year-old stepdaughter. These were additional charges to the previous offences relating to the same victim and go back to 2014.

A 49-year-old man was charged with the rape of his 15-year-old granddaughter. The accused was also charged with breach of a suspended sentence of 3 years as a result of a previous indecent assault charge.

In another incident, a 40-year-old man was charged with the rape of his 16-year-old niece, however, this matter was discontinued after the death of the victim.

There was one incident where a 29-year-old man was charged with the rape of an 8-year-old boy at a mosque.

A 36-year-old man was charged with the rape of a 51-year-old tourist from New Zealand.

A 20-year-old man was charged with the rape and indecent assault of a 16-year-old girl.

There was one incident where a 29-year-old school teacher was charged with the sexual assault and indecent assault of two 16-year-old boys from the same school.

A 24-year-old man was charged with the rape of his brother’s 23-year-old girlfriend. The accused and victim were residing in the same house at the time of the incident.

In another incident, a 30-year-old man was charged with the rape of a 4-year-old girl who was residing in the same house as the accused at the time of the incident.

A 48-year-old man was charged with the rape and attempted rape of a 7-year-old girl. The accused was a friend of the victim’s father.

A 20-year-old man was charged with the rape, sexual assault and indecent assault of a 19-yearold woman while in another incident, a 20-year-old man was charged with the rape and abduction with intent to have carnal knowledge of a 16-year-old girl.

There was one incident where a 23-year-old man was charged with the rape of a 22-year-old woman. The accused allegedly raped the victim when she was unconscious.

Two cases were withdrawn after discontinuances (Nolle Prosequi) were filed due to insufficient evidence and death of the complainant.
