Two former employees of the Public Works Department were sentenced by the Suva High Court yesterday.

Amelai Vunisea and Laisa Halafi who are serving prisoners were sentenced by Justice Chamath Morais after they were charged by FICAC with multiple cases of corruption related charges along with seven other employees….
Amelia Vunisea and Laisa Halafi both pleaded guilty to one count each of abuse of office and two counts each for causing a loss.

Vunisea has been handed a custodial sentence of two years and eight months while Halafi will serve a four year imprisonment term.

Halafi has been convicted of one count of obtaining a financial advantage of $300.

The High Court judge highlighted the actions of the two cost the company a total of over $10,000 .

The two are currently serving prisoners and will serve the sentences concurrently.

The remaining accused will appear on the 31st of this month for their pre-trial conference
