Cane farmers along the Wailevu Tiri area in Labasa, can now have a better harvest following an improvement in the drainage system, by the Ministry of Waterways.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Waterways – Dr Mahendra Reddy, who is on a two day tour in Labasa.
Reddy said that one of the major hurdles faced by these farmers, was the infiltration of seawater into their farms.
He adds they have made improvements in the maintenance of the drainage system, and have constructed new crossings, and they have also installed new gates for the floodgates.
This has put an end to the issue of ‘salinisation’ for these farms.
Elated farmer, Shri Krishna said that this would mean an increase of 400 tonnes of cane, compared to just 529 tonnes harvested last year.
65 year old Gyan Wati of Qelewaqa Labasa said – she was happy that her home was spared from the floodwaters, during the recent flooding.
Minister Reddy’s tour continues today.
