41 Landlords in Court for Illegally Increasing Rent
The Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission has take 41 landlords to court for illegally increasing the rent on residential properties despite the numerous warnings of the rent freeze.
The Commission has received one hundred and sixty-six complaints relating to residential rental issues, out of which, 3 landlords were fined $2 000.
The Commission has made 166 inspections but 41 were taken to court.
The issues were related to the illegal increase in rent, failure to keep payment records and agreements.
The maximum penalty for such offences is $10,000 for a first offender and $100,000 for a second or subsequent offender or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years or both.
